With apologies to Paris Hilton, that’s about the best way to describe the weather here in Las Vegas over the next few days. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch for us.
Listen, I don’t need to be on the lookout for something that hits you in the face the second you walk out of your house. If you’ve never been to Vegas in the summer…well let me put it this way…there’s usually a week or two every year of what I can only describe as, “a hot that I’ve never felt before.”
The high temperature today was 110 degrees. The forecast for tomorrow is 111. As I write this at 8:47 pm, it is 102. We’re talking hot you don’t want to mess with. Perfect pool weather though, I have to admit. But I even saw a couple of people in the pool today swimming for shade.
I had to be outside this afternoon only for about ten minutes. Of course I tried to stay in the shade as much as possible. It was kind of like sticking your whole body inside of a pre-heated oven. You know that part of your leg directly behind your knee? I was even sweating there.
I’ll never forget the hottest day I’ve ever experienced out here. I was driving down I-15 past the Luxor Hotel and just happened to glance at the temperature display: 122. That was weird. I remember thinking, “I don’t think I’ve ever been anywhere where it’s been 122 degrees before. That calls for a drink!”
Luckily, as I mentioned earlier, it usually only gets this hot out here for one or two weeks. You know we’re in those weeks when you hear people that were born and raised here even saying, “Wow, it’s pretty hot today.”
If this sounds like I’m whining, I’m really not. I’m just trying to offer you a little picture of what it’s like to be in Vegas right now. Because even as hot as it is, I’ll still take this over ice and snow and sub-zero temperatures in the winter. My heart goes out to all of you that have to deal with that every year.
Now if you’ll excuse me, it’s time for dinner. I’m going to throw a couple of steaks on the grill. Kind of cool that I don’t even need to light a fire. — vk
